Pre Requisites

Every candidate, prior to commencement of training for the NRASTC must:

  • Be 16 years of age at the time of taking the NRASTC assessment;
  • Be able to meet the following basic fitness criteria:-
  • Swim 20 metres continously on front and back
  • Tread water for 30 seconds
  • Surface dive to the floor of the pool
  • Climb out unaided without ladder / steps and where the pool design permits


Training and assessment for the NRASTC is in three sections and all must be successfully passed to attain the NRASTC.

Section A – Theory

  • Risk Assessment and Pool Hazards
  • Pool Safety Operating Procedures
  • Class Management and Safety
  • Emergency Action/Response/First Aid
  • Awareness of Suspected Spinal Cord Injury Management

Section B – Life Support – Adult & Child

  • Initial Assessment
  • Action for Vomiting
  • Recovery Position
  • Adult CPR
  • Child CPR

Section C – Water Rescue Test

  • Swimming Test
  • Poolside Rescue
  • Water Rescue
  • Rescue Breathing in the Water
  • Recovery of a submerged pupil
  • Stabilisation of a suspected spinal injury
  • Emergency Action Test

NRASTC Validity

The award is valid for 24 months from the date of achievement recorded on the certificate.
